The projects of Baikalplan e.V.

A differentiated image of Russia and its people cannot alone be communicated by occasional travelling through Russia or by establishing a web page. For that reason we offer different projects in order to call attention, promote ourselves and our aims and to realise them straight away.

On the one hand, there is the exchange of young people, which is in existence since 1995 and organised with the help of our friends of the Irkutsk Club of Cave Explorers Arabika. So far it has been possible for us either to travel to Lake Baikal with some young people or to welcome a group of young Russians in Germany once or twice a year.

Since 2003, Irkutsk has its first backpacker hostel, which serves as a work perspective for some young people from Irkutsk, and at the same time as an exemplary project for other initiatives of young people. Apart from that, it offers young people cheap accommodation in Irkutsk for the first time and thus facilitates travelling around Lake Baikal.

In order to support this hostel and other young initiatives, but also to encourage the gentle tourism in the Baikal region and arouse interest for it, our internet portal www.baikalinfo.com has been online since April 2003. Besides important and unique information for travellers from all over the world the portal offers insights into history and culture as well as into social and ecological aspects and thus intends to make a contribution to the appreciation of this culture that seems unfamiliar to us sometimes.

Don't forget our most recent project: The 'Great Baikal Trail'. So far, only few of the intended 1800 kilometres (more than 1100 miles) are walkable but we hope that the trail is extended every year.

For 10 years we have been attracted by Siberia. We celebrated this with a proper drink, a retrospect, and a great Russkaya Diskoteka.

Travel reports

Different travel impressions of different people, some adventurous, some crazy, some poetic...

Expeditions

It doesn't mater if it is the exploring of Russia's longest cave or a mud hole in Thuringia - the Baikalplan association goes with it..

www.baikalinfo.com

Since April 2003 you have been able to get almost every kind of important information about a journey to Lake Baikal or its surrounding area online on our travel info portal, ranging from possibilities of cheap accommodation to hints for the winter or for cave expeditions.

Research - caves at Lake Baikal

If you want to get information about the exploration of the Botovskaya cave (or as well other caves in the Lake Baikal region) you will soon discover that a lot is still in the dark. Being Russia's longest cave, the Botovskaya cave is a good example.
