What equipment to bring?
Many people may think that travelling to Siberia is somehow like an expedition. But they often forget that Irkutsk lies almost on the same latitude as London. In summer there's much more sun and much less rain at Lake Baikal than one may think.
For this reason, it will be enough to bring the same equipment for working at Lake Baikal as for a usual camping holiday, although the whole equipment has to fit in only ONE rucksack which shouldn't weigh more than 15kg (33lb). Sometimes you'll have to carry your rucksack over long distances by yourself. In addition to your personal stuff you'll also have to carry other equipment as well as food and drink. In these cases, your hands shouldn't be busy. That means that your daypack should fit in your rucksack, too.
But that's not as difficult as it seems since the tents and the equipment for cooking and working will be provided on the camps. Only in case you want to travel along Lake Baikal of your own accord after the work camp, should you bring your own tent.
In general you need:
- work clothes and work gloves
- rugged footwear
- Sleeping bag
(please note that there may be some light night frosts in June or September)
- cutlery as well as a cup and dish
- waterproof-clothes as well as weatherproof clothes that keep you warm also in June and September
- and the usual things (clothes, torch, tooth brush ...)
